North gets the upper hand on Arlington
Westerville North did little last night to tarnish its reputation as a streaky basketball team, outscoring Upper Arlington 17-0 during a span of 7 minutes, 9 seconds in the second half of the Westerville Rotary Holiday Classic championship game.
More important for the Warriors, though, is that they played intense, in-your-face defense for all four quarters during their 62-44 rout of the previously-undefeated Golden Bears in Otterbein College's Rike Center.
"We had a little lull here and there, but tonight we showed what we're capable of doing when we put forth a solid effort over the long haul, especially on the defensive end,'' North coach Kevin Thuman said.
As evidenced by 12 lead changes and six ties, the teams were matched for three quarters.
In the waning seconds of the third quarter, Josh Harris converted a third-chance tip-in to break a 35-35 tie and begin the deluge.
Anthony Rhodman came off the bench to score nine of his career-high 13 points in the surge, gaining him a spot on the all-tournament team. Playmaking teammate Mario Collins was named MVP for the second straight year.
"It was mostly the defense that helped us build that big lead,'' Collins said. "We got a lot of points off the steals and turnovers we created. They took some bad shots that got the fast break going, too. Everybody had a hand tonight, even the bench players.''
Rhodman wasn't necessarily looking to score, but with Upper Arlington concentrating on North's other scoring threats, he took advantage.
"I just wanted to go in and play hard and be a spark on defense, but I got comfortable and starting hitting,'' Rhodman said.
Thuman credited the unsung heroes for handing the Warriors (6-2) their fifth championship in the ninth annual hometown event.
"Trent Elliot is quite an athlete and he guarded two or three different sized kids and shut them all down,'' Thuman said. "That was a very important part of this victory.
"Anthony Rhodman gave us a huge lift. He's a talented young man, a junior who's trying to find a niche on a senior-oriented team.''
Upper Arlington (6-1), which thrives on high-percentage shots in a controlled transition attack, looked out of sync, largely because of North's pesky perimeter pressure. UA shot just 36.2 percent from the field.
"We just didn't get our shots tonight,'' UA coach Mitch Cerny said. "We were not really in a flow and our problems just compounded. We got in a situation where everybody tried to do too much too soon. Westerville also played some very good defense in that stretch.''
In the consolation game, Cleveland Benedictine (2-6) pulled away in the final 1:30 to defeat Westerville South 58-46. All-tournament selection Albert Davenport paced South (1-7) with 13 points.

"All of us are out to prove ourselves,'' said North senior guard Anthony Rhodman, who scored a career-high 20 points.
"A lot of guys on this team sat on the bench or played JVs last year, and now that we've earned the opportunity we want to make the most of it. We thought all along we had a chance to be a good team. There was an awful lot of talent sitting on the bench last year just waiting their turn."

Cajuns signed second recruit of the spring signing period!
He is 6'2 205 PG Anthony Rhodman from Lewisbrug junior college in Lewisbrug, NC. Anthony averaged 15.0 ppg and 5.0 apg. The cajuns watched him play last season and stayed in contact with him. He made an official visit last week to the campus. He had schools like Marshall University and Rutgers University recruiting him... The cajuns coaching staff saw him play again at Jerry Mullins Showcase this spring.
Anthony is from Columbus, OH where former UL great Bo Lamar is from!

In a game against the Cape Fear Community College Sea Devils, Anthony Rhodman was high scorer for the game with 23 points in 20 minutes and :40 seconds of playing time.

LAFAYETTE — UL Lafayette’s men’s basketball program has added a second signee for the 2004-2005 campaign, 6-foot-2 point guard Anthony Rhodman of Louisburg College in Louisburg, N.C.
Rhodman played for legendary Louisburg coach Enid Drake, who has won 665 games in 37 seasons.
Previously, UL signed 6-foot-2 Jeanerette star Derek Gray, who led the Tigers to the Top 28 Tournament with a 27.9-point scoring average in 2003-2004.
