Louisiana completed their first scrimmage of fall camp, playing 118 snaps on Saturday morning at Cajun Field. The Ragin’ Cajuns offense racked up 291 yards, while the defense forced two turnovers and 10 sacks in the contest.
Junior quarterback Chris Masson led the offense with eight completed passes for 72 yards. Seven of Masson’s eight tosses were at least six yards or longer. In the first half of the scrimmage, Masson connected with James Bulter for a 22-yard reception.
The Miami native added six rushes for 25 yards, including a 10-yard gain in the second half.
Aaron Spikes notched 47 yards in 11 attempts, while junior Kevis Streeter ran 11 times for 37 yards.
Brady Thomas connected on 5-of-6 passes for 33 yards, while teammate Blaine Gautier threw three completions for 32 yards.
Butler led the Louisiana receiving corps with three receptions for 47 yards. Senior Vernon Wolfe caught four passes for a total of 33 yards.
Nine different Cajuns recorded sacks. Redshirt freshman Andrew Hebert led the squad with one-and-a-half sacks.
Junior Melvin White recorded the first turnover, a 27-yard interception return on the fourth series of the first half. Two series later, Brandon McCray forced a fumble that the offense recovered.
In the second half, Dwight ‘Bill’ Bentley recorded a forced fumble, while Maurice Rolle Jr. made the recovery.
Kicker Brett Baer connected on three consecutive field goals in the scrimmage. The sophomore notched a 35-yard, 43-yard and a 45-yard field goal. Senior Tyler Albrecht made a 35-yard field goal in the second half.
A total of 19 players were held out in Saturday’s contest, but the majority of those are expected to participate in the second scrimmage next Saturday morning at Cajun Field.
UL will take Sunday off before resuming the last week of fall camp on Monday, Aug. 16.
