4 strike outs away from tying all-time record
RUSTON - Brooke Mitchell struck out 12 and a three-run first inning were enough to send No. 8 Louisiana to a 4-1 victory in game one.
Mitchell recorded her 22nd double-digit strikeout game of the season and held the Lady Techsters to two hits in the complete-game victory.
For Mitchell it was her 30th win of the season which made her just the fourth pitcher in program history to notch 30 victories in a season and moved her into sole possession of fourth place on the single-season charts.
Mitchell joins former Cajun pitchers Melissa Coronado, Cheryl Longeway and Kyla Hall as members of the 30-win club.
Louisiana (36-4) extended its win streak to eight games and won its 12th straight over Louisiana Tech (18-23).
The Cajuns jumped on top early with three runs in the first inning. A Hillary Guidry leadoff walk and four consecutive singles before an out was recorded staked UL Lafayette to the early lead.
After Guidry opened the game by drawing a walk from La. Tech starter Kristin Blodgette, Holly Tankersley ripped a single up the middle of the infield to give the Cajuns two baserunners.
Danyele Gomez, Ashley Evans and Brittany Bryant then followed with three straight RBI singles that made it 3-0.
Gomez's hit extended her season-high hitting streak to seven games and was the 100th of her career.
Blodgette struggled to find the strike zone in the second inning, walking two and hitting another, loading the bases with one out.
She was relieved by Marla Pinkston who struck out Evans and Bryant to end the Cajuns threat and leave the bases loaded.
UL Lafayette loaded the bases again in the third inning and were able to scratch for one more run when Tankersley was hit by a pitch from Pinkston forcing home Crystal George for the Cajuns fourth run of the game.
Tech's lone run of the contest came off a solo home run from Bridgette Broadnax to dead center field.
