LAFAYETTE, La. (August 10, 2010) – Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) announced today that necessary upgrades to a wastewater line will force the closure of two lanes on W. University Avenue at Lee Avenue in Lafayette, starting Saturday, August 14, 2010. The work is expected to last about 7 days, during which time traffic at the intersection will be merged into one lane in each direction, and left turns will not be allowed in the construction area.

In anticipation of possible traffic backups while the work is being performed, drivers are asked to avoid University Ave. between W. Congress and McKinley Streets whenever possible. Drivers can take the following alternate routes:

· Take W. St. Mary Blvd. to get between W. Congress St. and McKinley St.

· From W. St. Mary Blvd., take St. Landry St. to get to the Lafayette Consolidated Government Building

· Take Jefferson St. or W. Convent St. to get to Lee Ave.

· Take General Mouton Ave. to get between Johnston St. and Pinhook Ave., and to avoid traffic backup on University Ave. leading up to Johnston St.

Drivers are also asked to observe posted traffic and construction signs in order to help with traffic flow. Work will be ongoing throughout the project in order to ensure completion in a timely manner.

“This construction work is necessary at this time, in order to replace a deteriorated sewer line and maintain safety in the area,” said LUS Director Terry Huval. “Our crews will work day and night in an effort to minimize the inconvenience to Lafayette drivers.”

As part of the sewerage work, a new manhole must be installed on University Ave. Because of this, the construction work will require digging a hole into University Ave., thus creating a safety hazard for cars and pedestrians. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to stay away from the construction site while the work is ongoing.
