Louisiana’s men’s tennis team hosts Southern Miss Saturday for Senior Day
LOUISIANA La. - The match was originally scheduled for Thursday in Ruston, but the rescheduled match didn’t faze the Cajuns as Louisiana at Lafayette edged Louisiana Tech 4-3 Friday morning here at the Cajun Courts.
With the win, UL (5-11) snaps their four-match losing streak, dating back to March 20. Louisiana Tech (5-10) lost their second match in as many chances.
In doubles, the freshman duo of Shreveport native Kimmie Lyles and Cecilia Varela defeated Saharai Uriarte and Avril Martinez 8-4. Fernanda Kompatscher and Celine VanWeydeveld defeated Holly Ready and Monica Kelly at the number two spot, 8-6. Susan Linden and Thais Bortoletto defeated Annabella Duque and Andrea Moncada 9-7 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Louisiana Tech took victories in three of the top four spots. Linden was the only Cajun to win in the top half of the lineup. The Adelaide, Australia, native defeated Ready 6-1, 6-3. VanWeydeveld and Bortoletto both lost in straight sets in the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Duque needed a third-set tiebreaker to fend off Varela 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.
In the end, two freshmen, Lyles and Sophie Cerbon, helped push the Cajuns to victory. At the No. 5 spot, Lyles defeated Avril Martinez 6-2, 6-2, while Cerbon knocked off Katie Westbrook 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 6 slot.
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team will wrap up their home schedule Saturday when they host Nicholls State in a 10 a.m. dual match at Cajun Courts. The men’s tennis team will host Southern Miss in a 2 p.m. dual match and will honor seniors Michael Tarkowski and Marc Castellana for Senior Day.
