Two pre-school programs in Vermilion Parish will be around for at least another year. The board making that decision after some heated debate at Monday night's school board meeting in Vermillion Parish.
The problem here is the school board says it does not have the money in the budget to maintain these two pre-k programs. Monday night, parents and teachers packed into the school board office to voice their concerns. They say the programs are essential in the development of young children. Furthermore, many parents have already paid for enrollment, paid for uniforms and this conversation comes two weeks before school is set to start.
After hearing the outcry, the board voted uniamously to keep the programs, if only temporarily and officials will re-evaluate the situation in November, and see how many students are enrolled. Than, they'll decide whether these programs will be offered in 2011.
Keeping these programs means the school board budget is very much still in the red. The idea behind cutting the programs was to save roughly 3 million dollars, but to continue making them available is very very costly.
