Interest in Jessie

Think long and hard about giving Ricky Broussard the head coaching position if Jessie does leave. Nelson has never been one to hurry a decision about any head coaching job. Ricky would have to go through the interview process just like anyone else and Nelson would certainly make this a national search.
I'm not even sold on the idea that Jessie would make a lateral/lower move to USF even if the money is better. Jessie would have to start from scratch to get them back to post season play while the Cajuns are pretty much established as a post season team every year now. We'll see over the next few days.

Jessie and his agent maybe should rethink their apparent disdain for UL, as reports are that USF has entered talks with Perry Clark's attorney. Clearly they see Clark as a man that has had to deal with academics at Tulane, and maybe even at Miami. I think that they are making a mistake in Clark regardless of what they think about Jessie.

Folks remember Jessie is under contract until the the end of the June or July. IMO he should act like it and return to recruiting hard for UL. If he has a problem with that we should advise him that he is no longer in our future plans. I don't want to hear Jessie is in this city or that city in prime recruiting season unless there is a candidate that he has some reasonable chance of getting for UL.

It is OK to hire a winner that was once a loser, but never hire a loser, even if he was once a winner.

With all the money in the collegiate world, he couldn't win at Miami. Perry Clark is now a loser.

Exactly, he was a year away from being asked to leave Tulane and he let the Miami program head south.

Perry Clark did NOT have to deal with academics at too-lame once and for all!!!!!!!!!!!! A LARGE majority of the athletes at too-lame go to this "city college" for classes. Ask any kid that has played at too-lame and see what he tells you. I can assure you, look at some of the previous recruits over the past few years. If they say otherwise, THEY ARE LYING!!!!

USF narrows its list of coaching candidates to two or three

SAN FRANCISCO -- USF may be down to two finalists for its vacant basketball coaching job, although former Miami coach Perry Clark could make that number three.

Clark, 52, told the Miami Herald that USF athletic director Bill Hogan contacted him about the job, and he is deciding whether he wants to coach next season.

Hogan, who has spent six weeks looking for a coach after firing Phil Mathews on March 8, indicated Monday the search is down to a "final two." He declined comment on whether Clark could complicate that scenario.

Asked about the timetable, Hogan said, "It could be soon ... but don't hold me to that."

Arizona assistant coach Rodney Tention, a 1988 USF graduate and a candidate for the job from the beginning, appears still to be in the running.

"I honestly don't know anything," said Tention, who had not talked with anyone from USF as of Monday afternoon. Asked if that suggests he remains in the picture, Tention said, "I guess so."

Clark was fired by Miami last month after the Hurricanes lost 11 of their final 12 games to finish 14-16, their second straight losing season. In 2002, Clark directed Miami to a school-record 24 victories, and he posted an 11-year record of 185-145 at Tulane.



The final active candidate appears to be Jessie Evans, head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, who visited the hilltop campus last Wednesday and Thursday.

Evans, a former Arizona assistant, declined to offer any insights on the situation when contacted Monday by the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. "Absolutely, I can't comment on that," he said.

Evans has directed the Ragin' Cajuns to three straight 20-victory seasons, a berth in this year's NCAA Tournament and a seven-year record of 132-81. But his most recent three-year contract has expired and the university's president has indicated he is not happy that seven players have faced academic suspensions since the start of the 2002-03 season.
