USL to honor Thomas tonight

LAFAYETTE - Former Southwestern Louisiana All-American Orlando Thomas will have his jersey retired when the Minnesota Viking star is honored at halftime of the USL-Western Kentucky basketball game in the Cajundome tonight. The game begins at 7:05.

Thomas will be the third USL football star to have his jersey retired. He will be joined in the ceremony by the other two - Washington Redskins standout Brian Mitchell and Glenn LaFleur. LaFleur was a running back/linebacker from Ville Plate during the late 1960s.

In addition, several members of the football team will be honored for their accomplishments during the 1995 season when USL compiled its third straight winning campaign.

Among those honorees will be quarterback Jake Delhomme, USL's single-season and career passing leader; defensive end Jeff Mitchell, the Cajun career sack and tackle-for-loss leader; wide receiver Brandon Stokley, the USL and NCAA all-time single-season freshman receiving leader; running back Marcus Prier, the Cajuns' all-time single-season rushing leader among running backs; and kicker Mike Shafer, who set USL, Louisiana and Big West Conference records for consecutive field goals with 15.
