BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal stripped millions of
dollars in lawmakers' pet projects from the budget, scuttled a
spending plan to help cash-strapped coastal communities responding
to the oil spill and rejected several bills overwhelmingly approved
by legislators.
But none of that was enough to persuade lawmakers to return to
the Louisiana Capitol to hold a legislative session in which they'd
consider overriding the governor's vetoes.
In the end, it wasn't even close.
Ninety-two of the state's 144 legislators agreed to jettison the
veto session.
Both chambers officially released their vote tallies Tuesday.
Two-thirds of senators and 63 percent of House members voted to
cancel the session.
A majority written vote of either the House or Senate can end
the veto session.
