Michael Desormeaux explodes in win

NEW IBERIA — Catholic High senior Michael Desormeaux has been described as a “one-man show” numerous times.

Tuesday afternoon in the District 6-3A baseball opener, that statement couldn’t have rung more true.

Desormeaux went 3-for-5 at the plate with nine RBIs, while also tossing 1 2/3 innings of relief here Tuesday as the Panthers used a big sixth-inning outburst to beat the Teurlings Catholic Rebels 17-9 in the district opener for both teams.

Desormeaux belted a two-run single, a two-run double and capped off the day with a grand slam homer in a six-run sixth inning for the Panthers.

Desormeaux also added a sacrifice grounder in the first inning to plate a run to total nine RBIs.

“You know, I remember in the playoffs against Westlake a few years back, Charlie Babineaux had a big game, around the same type of numbers,” Catholic coach David Jordan said.

“But it wasn’t a day like Mike had today, especially in a game as close as this one was going into the sixth inning. It seemed like everytime we needed a big hit, he was there. Nine RBIs, that’s an awful lot against a team of Teurlings’ caliber.”

Desormeaux also closed out the game on the mound, scattering two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

“it was a good day,” Desormeaux said with a smile. “We had been struggling at the plate and today we turned that around. I think we relaxed a little with the early lead and let them get back in the game.
