Why would any university hire a black coach instead of a white coach that is equally qualified if firing the black coach might bring on 15 years of lawsuits?

I believe it was actually Blakeney, before he took the Troy job.. I could be wrong, though.

Coach Blanco's wife was getting ready to make a run for Governor. He and Authement saw politics and being part of the "winning" elite class as more important that the athletics program at a university they were in charge of.

    Plain and simple.

Kathleen Blanco, while I disagree with her ideology, is someone I've been able to respect. Her husband on the other hand, and utter piece of ____.

He took it in 91 so it wasn't before...I think he was also a candidate as well as RR...I think RR has just left Tulane for Clemson

I think you are mostly correct. I think Blakely was already at Troy, but it was a 1AA school at the time. From what I remember, Nelson wanted to hire him, but the university president at the time was against it because of Blakeley's involvement in the scandal at Auburn.

Blakeney had been at Troy for a while, but they were 1-aa at that time , so it would have been a move up for him

Nelson was actually interviewing blakney with Troy who at the time was a very good 1aa program. Had him ready to come here. The fossil shot it down cause Larry took the fall for pat dye with NCAA and had some baggage. The interview was in Atlanta, the brothers Ray called Nelson while there and told him to come home they found there man.

When blakney took over at Troy they weren't even 1aa yet. He took them through 2 moves up. My good friend I tailgate with in Troy played O line at the time they moved up to 1aa.

We were hot on rich rod when the bustle hire took place.

Look I'm as sorry about not getting Blakeny and Jerry Instead, but he didn't take the fall. He was caught cheating on national TV. That's why his career started and ended as the HC of Triy.
