One more thing... the WSJ argument. Read the following article's first line... it's an article on the UCLA professor's work.

    http://newsroom.ucla.edu/portal/ucla...UCLA-6664.aspx

"While the editorial page of The Wall Street Journal is conservative, the newspaper's news pages are liberal, even more liberal than The New York Times."

Am I really out of line having said that I thought the WSJ was neither left or right leaning? The editors of the WSJ, as I stated, and this is a quote "encourage our reporters to be independent and impartial". You told me that I'd like his paper. You told me he was a conservative. You added that I write things and can't support them. I only told you that I find the WSJ somewhere in the middle and that most political science professors are liberal. Most. You write a lot of things that are opinion-laden as well.

Again, I never attacked "CajunRebel"... and your personal problem of detesting and finding me "irrational" are junenile in my opinion. Giving my opinion and you giving yours is a liberatarian value. You might want to go back through the orientation again.

Turbine, has someone really taken the corporal punishment discussion down the road of "beating"? And, did someone say that spanking without any other form of discipline, much less love, respect and communication are not part of the package?

No (no one said) but that is how some view corporal punishment and I am not saying CajunEXPRESS even hinted at it, that was why I said I was going was off topic. Yes I have read of and even know someone who would spank first ask questions later to where the "love, respect and communication" were at the end of the package.

    Here is where I veered.

I wasn't accusing you of anything... I just can't believe when someone supports forms of corporal punishment it promptly goes to "beating".

I think its the word "Rod" my original point was, even the word rod doesn't automatically mean beating.

Exactly... I usually use a tire iron on my sheep.

I do encourage many of you to read the articles (if not his book Left Turn: How Liberal Media Bias Distorts the American Mind) on the UCLA professor's research results of bias in the media and his substantiation that it is "left-leaning". I get a kick out of what he says... and we do owe the tag to the professor's work to CajunRebel...

"Without media bias the average U.S. state would vote like Texas or Tennessee"
"All major news outlets have left leaning minds that distort minds"
"Every mainstream national news outlet in the United States has a liberal bias."
"That bias makes us more liberal, which makes us less able to detect the bias, which allows the media to get away with more bias, which makes us even more liberal."

His very pragmatic approach (and you will have to read how he kept bias out of the fact finding) is one of a kind. The research is being lauded. I imagine many aren't finding it very laudable... like those who gave our president the "Nobel Peace Prize" before he did a single thing in office.

But, be sure, this cannot be interpreted to have affected our public school system. I just want to make sure we don't get "that" crazy idea.

Instead everyone gets paid the same and there's no reward for doing a good job and no real pressure to do a good job.

And to your second point, the state needs to make sure that any school accepting their money meets acceptable standards. Audits should be performed yearly to ensure that the students are receiving a "good education." There are already state-mandated standards in place that all private schools must adhere to.
i appreciate your use of hyperbole in the first paragraph, but that was not even close to being true. beware of what gets reported by the teevee news and the daily fishwrap. i believe teachers were represented by their colleagues and by their organizations. if you were facing what our teachers were facing at the time, i believe you would have wanted some representation as well. but to state that "all" were there is over the top. as for your second paragraph, i merely stated that there was no accountability in the private schools like in the publics. there is so much more accountablity in the public schools than merely "acceptable standards." do we need to improve the system? hell, yes. but do we need to pretend that all is hopeless? we have good public schools in this parish. and we are not alone in that vein. i would point to the number of national merit semi-finalists and finalists that lafayette high produces every year. and then i would point to the fact that northside high and charter high need to vastly improve. and please tell me where these "strong" teacher unions exist in this state. some parishes might have better cohesiveness than others among their educators, but not strong unions as would, say, the pipefitters local in lake charles would have. all that being said, i do respect your input. it is well received. thanks for the dialogue.

thanks for your attempt at my edification. but, again, where is the "strong" union as mentioned earlier. you gave me a link to a teacher "organization." unions have collective bargaining power. they strike. they have job actions. how long has it been since the teachers of lafayette parish performed any type of job action? or any other type of union around here, for that matter? maybe you should do some homework, too.

Unions don't necessarily strike. They get together to block vote. Teachers belonging to unions and federations have been advised as to the extremely negative consequences in public opinion should they strike or take similar actions. The power of the union is in the organization of block voting and the purchase of lobbyists that lobby on their behalf. You think because you don't see teachers "striking" that there aren't unions. Come on man. Do your homework.
