Please tell me how the defense could have prevented the three trips to the Supreme Court. Any party can submit a writ for certiorari. The other side cannot prevent that. They can only submit briefs as to why it should not be granted. If the Court grants certiorari, the only thing left to do is to prepare arguments. The hearing before the Court is then determined by the Court, not the attorneys.

The 1st Cir (taken from the article posted in the OP) said:

"No witness, other than Baldwin himself, indicated that they had seen or heard of any kind of racial issue while Baldwin was head coach"

With this fact and a 6 - 27 record, how do you not win this case? While the jury in some cases may come to some strange findings and results, this one is a head scratcher.

At last, agreement on something. I agree, given Baldwin's record, the jury's decision was "a head scratcher." However, that does not necessarily mean that defense counsel did not present a strong case. I have seen many instances where a jury returned a verdict that flew in the face of the law, the facts, and common sense. That is why we have the appellate process. And, once the jury returned the verdict that it did, the rest of the process, and the time it took, could have almost been foretold.

The case IS a contract case with the additional added attraction of discrimination. The lead might specialize in one area but will have have others in firm or outside counsel assist in specific areas. The law firm that generally represents our U has competent attorneys. Not sure about their Civil Engr adjunct. He looks squirrelly.

A unanimous Louisiana Supreme Court denied Baldwin's appeal Wednesday without issuing written reasons.

"The courts have recognized that the University of Louisiana fired Jerry Baldwin as head football coach due to his 6-and-27 record on the field, not the color of his skin," one of the school's attorneys, Lawrence Marino, said Friday.

Good. Hopefully we can put this behind us.

What a piece of ____ Baldwin is. Made good money, while going 6-27, then wants to sue because he was fired.

Then there’s the whole thing about his “school”...

The worst thing about this news is that President Ray Authement died before this saga concluded.

Technically you are correct. But when the last trial ended, it was, in reality, over.

It's honestly one of the most painful things Doc ever went through. If there's anyone who never should have been accused of racism, it was Doc.

He sent me a letter after it was over, thanking me for my testimony in the three trials. It was very kind of him to do that.
