VILLE PLATTE, La. (AP) - The Evangeline Parish School board has
award a $3 million contract that will give Ville Platte High school
a long awaited face lift.
The contract was awarded Wednesday to Skip
Converse.
The school board will pay for the project through a special
federal low-interest program loan with a 15-year payback.
The condition of the 70-plus year old Ville Platte High has long
been a main sticking point with Justice Department officials during
the district's 40-year-old desegregation case.
At the urging of the court, the board attempted on three
different occasions, with no success, to pass a bond issue to pay
for a new school at Ville Platte High.
Superintendent Toni Hamlin said the renovation work is expected
to start by Aug. 1.
