Default Football Recruit, Ronald Martin in today's Advocate

I hope we can land this kid. He's a great athlete and student. He's pretty good at both basketball and football. His uncle, Matthew Martin was a pretty good cross country athlete for the Cajuns from 2003-2005.

He is being looked at by the Cajun's football and basketball staffs. He would like to play both sports in college according to our interview with him on June 29th.

i didnt know you could play both football and basketball in college because bball starts right as football ends. I guess he would enter the basketball season a little late or something

Not many do it any longer. Most college staff's want a year round commitment to a sport once on scholarship.

Julius Peppers and Donovan McNabb are two that come to mind. Also, Charlie Ward.

I'm sure there are more. Ward is the only one that I can recall who had more success on the basketball court though.

There was a tight end that played basketball here during the Evans era, but his name excapes me right off hand. It may have been only for a couple of years, (he could have been a JC transfer). I think he played forward. He would start playing basketball in December.

I can't believe how stupid recruiting gets at times----Let the Kid play both if he wants---let the kid play any position he wants---JUST get the kid---When the facts come out---the truth will get the kid to where he needs to be----Damn how stupid we can be in telling a kid where he can play!!!

The physical demands and time demands are just too great even for the brightest of kids. A successful football season would carry him into almost the beginning of finals and depending on the pounding from football season probably wouldn't be able to join the basketball team until the start of conference if lucky in late December. Then is the football coach willing to let him skip spring practice with basketball playing into March if they advance to postseason?

it seems that most recruits that come into a program saying they want to play 2 sports end up not doing it because they start to realize how much of a physical and mental challenge it is. I would say let him play both. chances are, eventually, he will just go with one sport.

Boomer, couldn't disagree more. Being untruthul to a kid during recruiting only screws u up further down the line

UNtruthful?????? Not at all--Nothing wrong with the coach telling him where he thinks the kid could best perform or help the team but maybe the coach could learn a little-----See Tim Brown's comments about Lou Holtz in today's DA!!!!!
