_ geez I can't figure out why there is a Moratorium until we figure out how to prevent this from happening again.

Yes, how do we prevent a freak accident like this from happening? Let's ask the airlines how they prevent air planes from crashing, let's ask coal miners how they prevent mines from colapsing, let's ask park ranger's how they prevent forest fires, let's ask train conductors how they prevent derailments.

Accidents happen in every industry and you take precautions to prevent them from happening but sometimes stuff just happens. I don't see all those industries getting shut down!

Was BP caught chasing a nickel in this situation? Probably, but I think there were some other factors at play as well that not everyone had control over.

Gee...could it stand to be good reason that a six month moratorium resolves nothing? Could it be that such a moratorium will lead to massive job layoffs, hurting numerous small businesses, destroying the tax base of small towns and cutting tax revenues to the state in the middle of a budget crisis?Or...could it be that the so-called committee established to research the BP spill is nothing more then a mouth piece for environmental extremist consisting of members that are on the record for being staunch anti-oil advocates?

The reason the spill is still spewing is the poor response of BP and the Federal Government, and countless bureaucratic obstacles that the President promised to remove?

Black colored Pelicans or not, people that support this moratorium need to look in the mirror when they feel the need to protest state budget cuts to higher education and state hospitals.

Dude, it was human oversight and corner cutting that got all of this "black stuff" in the water. So the entire industry should just hang out and find some other way to make a living for six months to a year so the Fed can drag their feet to investigate what everyone already knows? BP is a bad apple, don't let them spoil the whole thing.

Word is that Billy Nungesser, President of Plaquemines Parish, was approached by the Obama Adminstration and asked what it would take for him to quit going on the news and speaking out about the oil spill!!

I'm not a lawyer but isn't bribery of an elected official illegal? Also, doesn't this infringe on some kind of freedom of speech or freedom of the press rights?

I tell you what, you think Louisiana politics is crooked, but we don't hold a candle to the way those boys & girls from Chicago play the game.

i remember all too well the oil crunch of the mid '80's. the houma and lafayette areas were affected more than any other areas of the country. this event affected my employment status at the time--and i was just a poor old schoolteacher! so, i know how devastating a slow down in the oil industry can be to our economy. i'm of two minds on this one. the stronger of my two minds tells me the moratorium will crush our already soft economy. my other mind presents me with this problem: we continue to deep-water drill
as we have been with the 33 rigs out there. what happens, then, if one or more of the rigs blows its top as the deepwater horizon did, (which really was an accident waiting to happen)? we can't even cap this one. what do we do if we have two or more of these things in the gulf? how will our economy be affected then? just a little devil's advocacy.

_We would not be drilling out that far if not for liberal minded politicians who can't stand to see a rig on land or in view of the shore.

Excellent point that I have not heard brought up anyplace. If the west coast and east cost would have been open up to drilling we wouldn't have to be drilling to the center of the Earth in the Gulf!

that is such a lame comparison. As an airline pilot for a major airline. Let me assure you that if a plane has a problem that causes a crash the faa pulls the planes until they have been inspected throughout the system. Crashes are usually caused by pilot error but when a plane shows a malfunction which then causes that crash, they are all inspected. so if you want to call this a freak accident fine but we all know this was more like an accident waiting to happen. And hey I am real sorry this is hurting alot of peoples livelihoods. My family works in the oil business so I know but until we get some backup systems that are ready to deal with it, it will happen again. Its not if but when. and let me ask you something mr. airplane know it all. If I couldn't guarantee you that all reverse thrusters on an Airbus would not cause the same problem as the one that made the one break up over the ocean, would you put your behind on it again. Can you guarantee that this wont happen again with another oil rig? and we have the means put in place to stop it if it did. NO. you know you cant

And you find this hard to believe based upon what?.....What decision or legislation has been passed in the last two years to give you confidence that the moratorium has been nothing more then an exercise in trying to destroy another industry?

well whether you agree with his policies or not, Obama has gotten more legislation passed in six months than the last two administrations did in their whole time in office so I hardly think he is the kind of person that is sitting around doing nothing about passing guidelines. but hey if the Louisiana coastline wants to just rush back into the drill baby drill mentality and hope for the best that is your perogative but it hardly sounds like a wise decision from the rest of the country that is watching all this transpire.
