Oil town, or not Oil town it doesn't matter, there are alot of people that work in the oil industry in Lafayette and the surrounding areas. From service companies, to catering companies, to supply houses, the list goes on and on. Those people's jobs will be at risk if this continues. Also, if this goes into effect think about all the tax dollars lost that won't being going to schools? Our school system is mocked by the rest of the country already just think if we lose more funds!!

The Moratorium is bad for Lafayette, it is bad for Louisiana, and it is bad for the rest of the country that is clueless to just how much of the products they use on a daily basis are a result of the oil industy (Tires, plastics, gas, etc, etc).

I think the moratorium is a horrible idea. Why is that low skill high paying jobs in the oilfield can be sacrificed but low skill high paying union jobs must safed at all cost (auto workers)? I was watching the former CEO of Shell on cnbc talking about the blow out. He stated that if this had happened off the coast of California you would have seen a totally different response from the federal government with dozens of tankers off the coast sucking up the oil before it hit the coast. I agree with this totally. I do agree with a lot of what Joe said in that we will overcome but I the pain will be a lot higher and longer than what is stated in his piece. By the way could you please show me a regional economy that does not depend on a certain percentage of specialization? If you took computers from Silicon Valley, coal from West Virginia, Agriculture from Nebraska, movies from LA. Lafayette is not a one trick pony but like all other regional economies has sectors on which it depends on more than others. You damage the oil industry in Lafayette and it will hurt.

I still haven't heard of a (legit) reason for this proposed moratorium. If anybody knows of one, please share.

I continue to say (and I heard this on TV), if an airplane crashes, they don't shut down the airline industry. If there is a recall on cars, they don't close roads. If there is a shark attack, they don't shut down the beach. I know this is dramatically more environmentally damaging but it's the principal of the idea. If the fed really wants to kick the Gulf Coast while it's down, then go ahead with the moratorium. I love that these people from the Northeast know what is good for the Gulf Coast when most have never even been here. It seems like everyone from this region in the House and Senate are pleading not to do the moratorium but the rest seem to have that "We know whats best for your people" attitude. This whole thing is one huge Fluster Cuck. BP is claiming they are wide open to all ideas yet they shut out some of the smartest scientist and engineers in the world. The Govmt. seems to be making it so damn hard for anyone to help that this thing will never end. And if I see one more multi-million dollar commercial from BP with people employees "from the Gulf Region" claiming that they are just as angry and frustrated as everyone else, I just may go postal.

Assemble a team to go rig to rig as the rigs are operational and check the safety systems and do whatever they have to do. I see no positive in shutting down 33 rigs for 6 months and further crippling another huge industry in the Gulf.

Perhaps we aren't as dependent as we used to be and perhaps this is anecdotal, but just think in terms of just a few of the UL sponsors, in terms of the impact of the oil and gas industry:

    Moncla indoor practice facility
    Hilliard donation for museum
Lamson Park (I don't know where all the funding came from, but I do know Mr. Lamson was a major financial supporter of the program)
Rumored benefactor of Tigue renovation or replacement

Thats just a few off the top of the head and you guys know the names and sponsors better than I do. And thats not to say other businesses don't do their part too. But the oil and gas business, and especially the service sector which supports offshore operations, is still a big part of the economy in this area.

B/c those people don't have a clue!! They are fed this Liberal global warming propaganda 24/7 and don't know the truth.

I was talking with someone the other day that just came back from a business trip to Pennsylvania, and the people there thought once you set up a rig everthing around it died. The guy was like are you crazy, the rigs provide some of the best fishing spots!!!! That blew their minds.

They are just fed all this crap and don't know any better, but they think they do.

geez I can't figure out why there is a Moratorium until we figure out how to prevent this from happening again. Could it be THE BLACK STUFF THAT IS SPEWING UP AND DOWN YOUR COAST KILLING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT. Bush senior did the same moratorium after the valdez spill. It is not an uncommon thing after a disaster like this. It just happens to be hitting Louisiana where it hurts. Unfortunately so is the oil spill.

and I think this is going to be a hard one to blame on global warming freaks. The proof is in the BLACK pudding on this one. we as a society are all to blame for this one and god is shedding a tear watching how we failed to protect all his creatures as he put us here to do.

God put that oil in the ground for us to use as we see fit.

The events that led up to this disaster were governed by the actions of some stupid, stupid people.

We would not be drilling out that far if not for liberal minded politicians who can't stand to see a rig on land or in view of the shore.

As far as I can tell, BP screwed up, then the federal government took the baton from BP and brought this disaster home to what we see today.

"society" is not to blame. One greedy company and a buch of liberal/progressive/socialist politicians are.

Yes, how do we prevent a freak accident like this from happening? Let's ask the airlines how they prevent air planes from crashing, let's ask coal miners how they prevent mines from colapsing, let's ask park ranger's how they prevent forest fires, let's ask train conductors how they prevent derailments.

Accidents happen in every industry and you take precautions to prevent them from happening but sometimes stuff just happens. I don't see all those industries getting shut down!

Was BP caught chasing a nickel in this situation? Probably, but I think there were some other factors at play as well that not everyone had control over.

Gee...could it stand to be good reason that a six month moratorium resolves nothing? Could it be that such a moratorium will lead to massive job layoffs, hurting numerous small businesses, destroying the tax base of small towns and cutting tax revenues to the state in the middle of a budget crisis?Or...could it be that the so-called committee established to research the BP spill is nothing more then a mouth piece for environmental extremist consisting of members that are on the record for being staunch anti-oil advocates?

The reason the spill is still spewing is the poor response of BP and the Federal Government, and countless bureaucratic obstacles that the President promised to remove?

Black colored Pelicans or not, people that support this moratorium need to look in the mirror when they feel the need to protest state budget cuts to higher education and state hospitals.
