#44 Payton Townsend played for Louisiana from 1968-1972. He ranks 26th alltime in total scoring with 1240 points. While UL was Payton's place the team went 86-25 and was ranked as high as 2nd in the nation.

"Payton Townsend attended Garfield Griffins High School in Hamilton, Ohio. Payton led Garfield Griffins to the state basketball tournament in 1968. Payton was all-conference before coming to the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

He was also inducted in Butler County Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 29,1998. Payton Townsend was the third family member to be inducted in the Hamilton City School District Athletic Hall of Fame. On Feb. 4, 2001, he joined brothers Mike and Willie as great athletes to come out of Garfield Senior High School. He also was named Teenager of Year, that same year, in Cincinnati, Ohio and the Butler County area. At USL he was named to All-Conference teams for four years. He was a member of SLU's Gulf State Conference Championship team in 1971 and voted freshman of the year in 1968. He holds the all-time field goal percentage record with a .626 shooting percentage. Payton resides in Lafayette, LA, with wife Diana, daughter Trudy, and son Troy. He is still working in the oil field industry."
