Louisiana Shrimp May Still Be Safe to Eat.
A new joint protocol issued on June 29, 2010 and developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is designed to make sure that seafood coming out of the Gulf of Mexico will be safe for consumers.
Working together with state health officers and state fisheries directors from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the various federal agencies plan on implementing the protocol to rapidly close off areas affected by the oil spill to avoid contaminated seafood from ever reaching the market.
They will also test fish in other areas to continually monitor the levels of contamination and help them quickly determine if new areas need to be closed off or previously closed areas are ready for reopening.
