The Cajuns improved to 22-2 overall on the season, and will now play Florida at 10:30 a.m. today and Rhode Island at 4:30 p.m.
In game one, junior pitcher Brooke Mitchell increased her season strikeout total to 200, striking out five UConn batters to give the Cajuns a 2-1 victory. Mitchell improved to 15-1 overall the season, while Jessica Gurney fell to 1-3.
After each time retired the first three batters of the opening frame, UConn began the top of the second with a pair of base hits by first baseman Maggie Arbogast and Jennifer D’Angelo, giving the Huskies two base runners with nobody out.
Jennifer Ward then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third with one out. UL starting pitcher Heather Bobbitt struck out the last two batters, allowing the Cajuns to escape the Huskies’ early scoring threat.
The Cajuns then countered with a scoring threat of their own in the bottom half of the second. Designated player Ashley Evans led off the inning with a single to left and then stole second base before Lacey Bertucci struck out.
With one out, Brittany Bryant laced a single threw the left side, advancing Evans to third. Bryant then stole second to give the Cajuns two runners in scoring position. A Joy Webre walk loaded the bases for the Cajuns.
Junior leftfielder Crystal George then grounded into a double play, leaving the game scoreless after two complete innings.
