BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal has rejected a bill
aimed at getting more information about the numbers of jobs and
types of businesses being recruited by the state's economic
development office.
Jindal vetoed the measure by Chalmette Rep. Nita Hutter on
Wednesday, at the urging of his Department of Economic Development.
Among other things, the proposal would have mandated reporting
of the revenue generated by new businesses attracted by the
department and a tally of the companies recruited.
In his veto letter, the governor says the bill could hurt
business recruitment in Louisiana by requiring the department to
publish information about every company contact it makes, even
"casual inquiries." Jindal also says the bill would have required
the reporting of proprietary company information that is
confidential when reported for tax purposes.
