The early word on CBs Ricardo Colclough and Ike Taylor is uneven at best. Both are experiencing a lot of growing pains. Taylor will be fun to watch at nickel back. He should make a play or two to give fans something to look forward to. The buzz surrounding Colclough is almost non-existent, which would have to be considered a bit of a disappointment.

2003 Panther review I've been around a long time, and I don't recall a team forging such a miraculous season, with game after game being decided in overtime or by the most scant margin of victory. A total of 10 games were decided in overtime or by three or less points, and John Fox's team prevailed in eight of them. I'd be willing to say that was unprecedented success in the history of the NFL.

2004 preseason Quarterback Jake Delhomme was a little inconsistent is his first game action since February's Super Bowl. Playing behind a new offensive line in search of cohesiveness, Delhomme completed 4 of 8 passes for 44 yards, his longest completion a 25-yarder to Muhsin Muhammad.

Delhomme led three drives, one of which ended on the Redskins' 1-yard line. The Redskins stuffed the Panthers on three consecutive running plays from the 5-yard line to force a field goal.

"I felt OK," Delhomme said. "Offensively we would have liked to get seven points when we got to the 5-yard line. That's the only thing that's a little disappointing. We moved the ball pretty well, but it's the first preseason game and we have a lot to work on starting on Monday."

Steelers I watched in dismay as Ike Taylor missed a few tackles and otherwise did not seem to make an impact. I did not however, get to zero in on him in coverage. Thinking back to last year I do remember being more impressed with his coverage ability that run support/tackling. Maybe that's his weakness, but given his size and quickness you would think he should improve.

Tyler Davidson, Dante Brinkley, Ambiorix Concepcion and Corey Coles all are in the top 10 in batting average -- each are hitting .303 or higher.

They have reaped the benefits of having Mitchell around, especially Coles, who last year hit .167 (6-for-36) in 15 games.

Coles has been the leading hitter for Brooklyn most of this season, but has dipped to fourth on the team with a. 303 average. Concepcion leads the Cyclones at .318, with Davidson and Brinkley both at .314.

Coles says Mitchell has helped him tremendously with his swing. "He helped me flatten the bat out and keep it down a little," said Coles, in his second year. "It helped to get my bat swing out a lot quicker."

Second-year cornerback Ike Taylor who has attracted the wrath of coach Bill Cowher on the practice field, has a unique way of easing the pressure of training camp. When he commits a penalty and Cowher hollers at him, Taylor said he acts like he doesn't know what Cowher means. "I say, 'Who me? You called that on me. Oh, that wasn't me.' Its all mental. You have to find something to keep it going." Taylor said his attitude sometimes gets him in trouble. "Coach gets on me a lot because my personality is real laid-back and I don't worry about things. Coach is very emotional. I get emotional during games, but in practice, I'm really trying to stay focused."
