The hardest call of all was Alabama over Louisiana in the Sweet 16. Each advanced easily over opponents with the respective names "Crimson Tide" and "Ragin' Cajuns." Classics, both. There, as with the Liberty-over-St. Joe's pick, I had to go with the force of nature. A Cajun, no matter how Ragin', can't do anything about an algae (yes, crimson tides are caused by algae) that kills everything near it.

Will Louisiana be able to translate its close losses in "up" games against Arizona, Xavier and Dayton into playing well enough to beat NC State?

Quick Ragin' Cajuns Preview: This is not your average No. 14 seed as the Ragin' Cajuns are going to Orlando, Fl expecting to defeat N.C. State. UL-Lafayette returned their top five scorers from a year ago and added SEC transfers Orien Greene (Florida) and Dwayne Mitchell (Auburn) to the mix this season.

Finishing 20-8 on the year and winning the Sun Belt Conference, La-Lafayette had five players who averaged double figures, led by 5'11 point guard Antoine Landry. Landry and 6'6 guard Brad Boyd were the focal points of an offense that centered around hitting the 3-point shot and strong, agressive rebounding.

Defensively the Cajuns love to press and use their athleticism for easy transition buckets, but also mix in a zone at times. If NC State can handle the pressure and get into their offensive sets, their unique system will be tough for UL-Lafayette to defend.

Either way you slice it, this won't be an easy game for NC State, and the Ragin' Cajuns will be gunning for the upset.

Upset Special
Call it a gut feeling, call it instinct, but a good pick to get the early round exit rests squarely in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

That's right.

Look for N.C. State to be a prime candidate to make a first round exit this year. The Wolfpack (20-9), seeded third in the Phoenix Regional, will face off with 14th seeded UL-Lafayette (20-7).

The thought process here is simple, the Rajin' Cajuns implore an up-and-down attack that features a lot of three point shooting and long rebounds. Never mind the fact that this team returned all five of its leading scorers from a year ago and added two transfers in from the SEC.

After a strong regular season that saw State finish only behind Duke in the standings, the Wolfpack blew a 21-point lead to Maryland in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.

Not exactly what you would call a "momentum builder."

And a word of advice to newly crowned Coach of the Year Herb Sendek, and ACC Player of the Year Julius Hodge: if anybody for ULL gets hot from behind the arc in this game, look out!

The Wolfpack, with their methodical style of play on offense, has the type of team that could easily falter under the pressure.

Mark it down now.

PONTIAC MODEL: In today's first game, 14th-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette plays No. 3 seed North Carolina State, with the winner advancing to Sunday's game against the winner of the Western Michigan-Vanderbilt game. Lafayette is coached by 1968 Pontiac Central grad Jesse Evans.

"I played there right before Campy Russell," said Evans, who also played at Eastern Michigan. "I played with Campy's brother Frank. Let's say I passed to Frank. Pontiac had a lot of legends, but Campy was the best."

Evans is something of a legend in Louisiana, or at least in Lafayette. In his seventh season, Evans has a 132-80 record and has moved into second place in the Sun Belt Conference coaching record book with 70 league wins. The Ragin' Cajuns have 20 wins in each of the last three seasons, and this is their second NCAA appearance under Evans.

Difference in diagnosis: Injured North Carolina State guard Scooter Sherrill sounded like someone who expects to play in today's opener against Louisiana-Lafayette in Orlando, Fla. His coach, Herb Sendek, sounded just the opposite.

"Scooter has been very optimistic," Sendek said Thursday, "but he isn't anywhere near where he left off."

Technically, Sherrill, who suffered a torn muscle in his left ankle on Feb. 29, has been cleared to play, Sendek said. But even Sherrill admits his ankle is no better than 80 percent healthy.

"There's a lot of pain," he said. "There's no denying that."

Sherrill ran in five-on-five drills for about 15 minutes Wednesday, the first full-speed work he's done since the injury. However, his foot was extremely sore Thursday and, essentially, sidelined him again.

He said he believes he can play today, but the decision isn't his to make. "I can say whatever, but if (Sendek) doesn't see it, he's not going to play me," Sherrill said.

Though the teams changed leads five times during the first half, Louisiana-Lafayette endured a 13-minute span without making a field goal. When the stretch began, midway through the first half, the Ragin' Cajuns led 16-13. When it ended, they trailed 34-28.

On the nuances of March Madness
March Madness' most famous characteristic is the idea of the upset. Annually, a handful of underdog teams pull off shocking wins over the favorites, and this year's tournament has already proved no different. Two No. 1 seeds were knocked out in the second round, along with a number of other top teams.

Underdogs can emerge among the fans as well. Those who know absolutely squat about the teams or about basketball are not only able to enjoy the games as much as those who do, but they can also succeed in the pools because of the tournament's unpredictability. They may pick teams like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette because its nickname is the Ragin' Cajuns. They may pick teams simply because they have players with cool names such as Zakee Wadood of East Tennessee State. Any strategy is valid.

"Everybody loves the wild iris."

One look explains why. The stunning flower of the species most common locally -- the Louisiana "blue" iris that most people call "purple" -- has gracefully drooping petals painted with a deep, blue/purple, giving way to a bright lane of yellow near the stem. The colors would stand out anywhere, but are especially eye-catching in the evergreen of local wetlands.

The effect was not meant to attract human tourists.
