What's supposed to be being used to protect Louisiana's coast from the oil, is instead being vandalized. After several reports of boom vandalism,a Public Service Announcement was released in hopes of preventing further damage.
The PSA urges residents to help protect the State's shoreline and marshes by not cutting, tampering or moving boom currently in place. Officials say, boom is an essential part of the ongoing response efforts and damaging boom jeopardizes coastal protection from the oil.
In Acadiana, boom vandalism has been reported in Iberia and Vermilion Parishes. Emergency Preparedness Officials say the cases they've seen are cut boom. They believe boaters are cutting the anchors or simply going over the boom, trying to get to their favorite fishing spots like in Marsh Island.
Officials say, boom is in high demand right now, and there is a shortage of supply. So, they're not sure how long it could take to replace the damaged boom. In the meantime, those areas will be vulnerable to the oil slick.
