I agree & he was well liked by the players for his personality & coaching knowledge. I wonder what his wife will be doing, as I understand she was valued employee at UL?

I talked to Coach Bartel at the recruiting party, he is a very nice man.

I have heard his ankle is not completly healed and is giving him trouble. It will be hard to judge his mobility if that is true. We need a qb who can run and pass, IMHO that is why Desmoreaux was recruited. We do have another JC qb coming in the fall that is suppose to walk-on. Like you, I like open competition, it only brings out the best in players.

You need to recruit at least one quarterback each year. It's such a critical position, you need two back-ups ready to go at all times.

"Look, no one is counting on Williams & his not being eligible is probably not entirely his fault. He wasn't eligible when he came to UL, he was a prop. "

My point is not to cast a stone on him, but to remind people that we cannot count on people that may never be here. I hope he can get his grades up to snuff and be a competitor at the position. If he squeaks in with his grades at the end of the spring period, do you as head coach move him into full rotation in the fall? I suspect you would invest more with the players that have proven they can be there. If on the other hand he has made his grades in good fashion, then coach will I am sure give him every opportunity.

CE, I didn't mean to sound like I scolding you, I pretty agree with your last statement. However if he makes the grades, I think you have to let him compete for a spot because his eligibility clock is ticking. I think a prop's first year counts. Believe me, the fact that he might be in perpetual academic jeopardy doesn't make a whole lot difference because after the last semester a sizable portion of the team was in jeopardy, including projected starters. It's just a fact of life.

    Snote,
We are 14 hours ahead of Cajun Daylight time! Can't wait till your clock moves forward one hour, as 13 hours is easier to deal with than 14! My home office is in Houston and the time difference is a real pain sometimes. I've been overseas going on 15 years, but its still a pain.

I usually get back in the fall for budget meetings, but missed a couple lately due to mergers and 9/11. I always make a home game if I'm in the States at that time. I meet with several teamates every summer when I go back for home leave.

I tell you what, it's been painful to go to the games over the last few years. Not so much that we are losing games, but the lack of fans is hard to take. When I played 75-77, we had big crowds all the time. 76 was our best year, but we had good crowds before that. I know there has to be more people in Acadiana today! The students really supported the team back then too. I sure would like to see 28-30,000 a game again!

    Snote,
I played QB during my time at USL. I walked on in the spring of 75 (talked into it by a good friend from Rayne). I think I was 8th or 9th string QB when I walked on and then due to a combination of injuries, a few breaks and a transfer I started the spring game! I made the traveling squad as the 3rd string QB in 75 and then backed up Roy in 76 & 77. What a talent he was! People don't realize just how good he was or could have been! Me, I was happy to be on the team playing the only position I could given my lack of size and speed (best time in the 40 was 4.7). They put me on scholarship after the Lamar game in 75. I was literally thrown into the game near the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th quarter. Our O.C. (Larry Zeno) bypassed Barry Pollard (Juco from California) and told me to take off my baseball cap and put down the clipboard because I was going in the game! Wow, I still get goosebumps thinking about that night! I ended up scoring the go ahead TD and Barry Johnson sealed the victory with a INT for a TD! We both got game balls. Barry is a good freind, though he likes to remind me of the fact I walked on and didn't play that much...but hey, I was an All-American holder! I held for Rafael for two years and John Reveto my Sr. year. I figure if the kicker makes All-American, the holder does too! LOL!

Of course, I know all the guys you mentioned in your reply. Steve Judice and I are great friends. He is one of the guys I usually hook up with during home leave. Same for Jimmy Poche, David Goff & David Gray. John Bordelon and I had a falling out a long time ago. Things are better now, but we don't see each other enough to get back to having the same relationship as before. I'll have to work on that when we do move back for good.

Not sure what you mean being on the show, are you talking about while I'm in the States or from Kuala Lumpur? Either way is fine with me. I have few stories to tell, if you are interested.

    Rick
