Louisiana scores 27 runs in DH sweep.
LOUISIANA La. — Make that 33 home softball wins in a row for UL Lafayette.
The LAdy Cajuns braved cold, wet conditions to hammer visiting UL Monroe 20-0, 7-0 on Wednesday at Lady Cajun Park, improving to 15-1 on the season behind un-touchable pitching and plenty of hitting.
Junior Brooke Mitchell combined with Heather Bobbitt for a perfect game in the runaway opener, then struck out 15 and allowed one hit to finish off the visitors in the nightcap.
“Knowing you’ve got a Brooke Mitchell on your team, where you can roll the ball out there and she’ll get 15-16 strikeouts, is very comforting,” co-head coach Michael Lotief said.
“What a warrior. We gave her the ball four times this weekend (at UL’s Mardi Gras Classic). At the beginning of the tournament she beat them with power. Then she was tired for the last game, but beat them with her mind.
“She went through a learning curve herself. It’s a different level of maturity here.”
Four ULM pitchers walked nine batters in the first game on Wednesday, and when back-to-back home runs from Crystal George and Tiffany Hebert completed a 9-0 first inning, the Cajuns gave Mitchell a rest.
“The plan was to use both Brooke and Heather in the opener,” coach Stefni Lotief said. “Then, when we got nine runs in the first inning, we said, ‘Heather, go get ’em.’ Brooke still needs to get her work in, too.”
