BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's unemployment rate rose to
6.9 percent in May.
The federal Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday, at the same
time, the state added 11,100 jobs last month, one of the best
numbers on a percentage basis in the United States.
The April unemployment rate - on a seasonally adjusted basis -
was 6.7 percent. In May 2009, Louisiana's jobless rate was 6.8
percent.
While employment increased last month, the BLS says the number
of unemployed rose by 3,600 while the civilian labor force
increased by 5,500. That's a typical post-recession indication that
once-discouraged workers have again started looking for employment.
It wasn't immediately clear how the Gulf of Mexico oil spill
might have affected the May employment picture.
