PINEVILLE, La. (AP) - High temperatures have sparked increased
demand on electric utilities in the state's Acadiana region,
prompting the companies to ask customers to conserve energy to help
prevent brownouts.
Cleco Corp., Entergy Corp., SLEMCO, Lafayette Utilities System
and Louisiana Energy and Power Authority joined forces Thursday in
urging customers to reduce their usage. The utilities serve a total
of 230,000 customers in the region.
According to a joint news release Thursday, the most effective
conservation measure customers can take is to raise the thermostat
on their air conditioning unit or turn it off - if health permits.
The companies also suggest customers unplug household appliances
not in use and don't use major appliances, like washing machines,
dryers, ranges and computers, unless it's at night.
The utilities say controlled service interruptions would only
occur as a last resort to "protect the system from damage and
prevent longterm, widespread power outages."
