LOUISIANA La. — So far, it’s been smooth sailing for Louisiana's LAdy Cajun softball team.
Now 8-1 on the young season, the Cajuns are back home this weekend to host the Mardi Gras Classic at Ragin’ Cajun Softball Park.
And if they hold form, the LAdy Cajuns will present a tall task for visitors from Missouri, Texas Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Prairie View A&M and Stephen F. Austin.
Junior Brooke Mitchell put on a pitching clinic in Wednesday’s 3-1, 3-0 doubleheader sweep at Nicholls State, registering an early bid for a second straight Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week notice with a pair of one-hitters and 24 total strikeouts.
“We played some good ball,” co-head coach Stefni Lotief said. “Obviously Brooke pitched well, and (catcher) Joy Webre called a spectacular game. As a tandem, they’re working like a well-oiled machine.
“We also got some key hits. Leslie Pierce had a two-run home run in the fifth inning of the opener, and Danyele Gomez homered in the sixth.
“The next game, again, was a good pitching performance, and we put some runs together.”
Tiffany Hebert had two hits and two runs in the nightcap, while Hillary Guidry collected three hits.
“The Canadian pitcher they have (Dione Meier) is really good,” Lotief said of the Game 1 loser. “It was nice to see how we’d do against her. We knew she was going to be tough to face, but the girls kept plugging away and making adjustments.
“They have a big park, so those home runs were very well hit.”
