Press Release: In an effort to help a Lafayette family defray medical and travel costs in a tragic time of need, a support fund has been set up at Home Bank in Lafayette. Several members of the Murphy family were involved in a fatal incident while visiting South Africa for the World Cup. St. Thomas Moore Alumna, Nicole Murphy, daughter of Dr. Danny and Charlene Murphy, was struck and killed by a car. Murphy's brother, Brian, was also critically injured in the incident.

A Lafayette family's trip to the World Cup has took a tragic turn. 24 year old Nicole Murphy was struck and killed by a car in South Africa Tuesday. Murphy was in South Africa with her Dad and three siblings. She and two of her siblings were hit by a car, her brother Brian is in critical condition but is expected to recover.
Murphy graduated from Saint Thomas More Catholic High School in Lafayette and went on to play soccer at the University of Tampa. She was entering her third year of medical school at LSU New Orleans.
Murphy's family did not have all the details surrounding the incident, but say the driver of the car initially fled the scene but has since been apprehended.
Funeral services are pending.
