BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Education is
laying off 31 employees because of budget cuts.
The department announced the layoffs Friday. They will take
effect July 1 and include positions in management and finance, the
regional education centers, and the school and community support
office.
Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek says the agency is
cutting contracts, travel and supply costs to cope with budget cuts
that already have stripped revenue from the department. The agency
is proposed to take another $9 million reduction in the upcoming
year.
The department will have 691 positions in the 2010-11 budget
year, compared to 739 in the current year, trimmed down by layoffs,
retirements and the elimination of vacant jobs.
