While coaching at the University of Louisiana Ron West served as an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, and inside linebackers coach.

At UL the defenses Ron West had a hand in ranked among the nation's top 20 in total defense on three occasions.

The defense was ranked nationally in at least one defensive category for six consecutive seasons.
