According to Sheriff Mike Couvillon, on the evening of June 8 the Vermilion Municipal Narcotics Task Force was working street level sales disruption of illegal drugs in the Abbeville area.

While conducting narcotics investigative patrol agents approached a vehicle that was parked in a suspicious manner on the 800 block of Hawthorne St.

Upon investigating, agents came in to contact with Oris Briggs Jr. Agents began asking Briggs a few questions and noticed possible illegal narcotics in the said vehicle in plain sight.
