BATON ROUGE-In their second trip to Baton Rouge in less than two weeks, Louisiana’s Lady Cajuns tennis team left with a 7-0 decision, this time in their favor, defeating Southern University Friday afternoon.

Louisiana (1-1) lost to No. 49 Louisiana State by the same margin on Jan. 25 at the W.T. “Dub” Robinson Tennis Stadium. The loss drops Southern University to 0-2 overall.

Last season, the Cajuns defeated Southern 4-1 in Baton Rouge and hold a 2-0 advantage all-time against the Jaguars.

All six singles matches were decided in two sets. Freshmen Celine VanWeydeveld, Cecilia Varela, Kimmie Lyles and Sophie Cerbon all won their first matches as Ragin’ Cajuns. Junior Susan Linden and sophomore Thais Bortoletto also notched victories in singles play.

In doubles, Louisiana took two of the three matches, securing the shutout victory. VanWeydeveld/Bortoletto defeated Kelli Nabors and Francisca Ossedumme 8-3. In the number two doubles match, Lyles/Varela was down 5-2 before rallying for an 8-6 victory over Tania Hicks and Ariana Marshall.

Linden and Fernanda Kompatscher was the only Cajuns pair to suffer defeat, dropping a 9-8 decision to Isoke Perry and Sarah Johnson.

“I am really happy with the girls’ performance,” said first-year Louisiana coach Lisa Jackson. “The conditions were rough, but the girls didn’t complain. They went out a played hard and it is a great win for us.”

Louisiana will look for win number two when they face No. 72 Arkansas in Fayetteville on Wednesday.
