A sideline observer looked at me like I was from Mars.

“Five and six?” he said, wide-eyed. “Oh, no, they’re going to be way better than that. I’d say 8-3, at least, or 9-2.”

He could be right. Louisiana could break out and win eight or nine games in the 2004 football season which kicks off next Saturday against Northwestern State.

So when I was asked at a recent Cajun practice what kind of finish UL would have, I gave it a “6-5 or 5-6, right around .500” guess that rankled some resident optimists.

Certainly, coach Rickey Bustle and his staff are planning to be in the hunt in at least 10 of 11 contests, with Big 12 member Kansas State an unlikely place to grab an upset.

But, as someone who has seen most of the Cajuns’ football games over the last 33 years and written about them for nearly that long, we merely suggest that fans should walk before they run.

UL has won eight games in a single season just four times in the last 50 years (1968, 1970, 1976 and 1993) and nine games twice (1970, 1976) in that span.

Since 1989, Cajun teams have a combined 50-105-1 mark.

Under the circumstances, a .500 record would be an admirable step for the Cajuns.

Surpassing North Texas as the top program in the Sun Belt Conference and earning a berth in the New Orleans Bowl would be an even bigger step, and as such is a tougher one to take.

One thing seems certain — if every fan who is predicting big things for UL shows up on a regular basis at Cajun Field this fall, the Cajuns will gain a distinct homefield advantage.

Zee looks to be recovering from his offseason injury just in time for the opening game. Fish has a new lightweight contraption on his injured had but it might be the third week of the season before he can fully contribute with the roadkill. Patti, 84, Turbine and Rickman all look ready to go. And of courrse, Fun is in fine mid-season curmudgeon form. Its game week!.

Demons have high ’04 hopes

NATCHITOCHES — For a team that finished .500, ended the season on a four-game losing streak and tied for last in its conference, there sure is a lot of buzz about Northwestern State’s football team.

The Demons are regarded by many as a playoff team and by some as a squad that could make a deep postseason run.

The Sports Network, the authority on Division I-AA football, picked NSU to win the Southland Conference.

“There are some big expectations,” said junior receiver Toby Zeigler. “But we expect big things from ourselves.”

The question now is whether the Demons will live up to the billing — a question that will start getting an answer Saturday when NSU faces UL Lafayette at Cajun Field in the season opener for each club.

The talent is certainly there.
