    Goalline stand is highlight

LOUISIANA La. — The nose of the ball sat an inch or two away from the end zone.

It was fourth and goal towards the end of Saturday’s UL Lafayette scrimmage at Cajun Field, and it was time to see which unit had more strength.

The winner in that head-to-head matchup was the defense, as senior middle linebacker Stanley Smith led a charge that stuffed running back Abdule Levier for no gain.

“The defense stiffened up at the goal line,” coach Rickey Bustle said. “You’ve got to develop an attitude on both sides of the ball — the offense says we’re going to get in, and the defense says you won’t.

“One way or the other, the Cajuns were going to win that one.”

"scary" a tad too strong an adjective, if you think about it.. he got up slowly hobbled a bit and walked off..

i like your "this point in the season" thinking.. i booed him for one throw .. my guess is, the learning process of when to use touch vs zipping it right in there.. the second pass of the day.. to the main stadium north side corner was thrown in between those two types.. (at first glance)

not 100% sure the time and place for our (jerry and i) weekly "radio gig" together.. we're working it out and if i may.. be like you... use your thinking, of our "timing" .. at "this point in the season" .. we are too, with our progress.. smiles

what i have been mentioning to my youngest nug.. "it's not the size of the dog in the fight.. it's the size of the fight in the dog" could be a mantra that this years defense could use..

there is fight in their coaches for sure

got a nice laugh, when i heard a watcher walking up the stairs say to his buddy.. "it's funny how far they kick it when their just warming up on the side."

  4. Default Regular matchups benefit Cajuns

LOUISIANA La. — Louisiana's countdown to the 2004 football season is under two weeks now, and there’s no doubt the Ragin’ Cajuns will be eager to line up against Northwestern State on Sept. 4.

They’re bound to be tired of looking at each other by then.

On the other hand, there’s something to be said for trying to excel against people who know what you’re up to every day.

“We see the same defense for 5-6-7 days in a row, that should make us better,” offensive coordinator Rob Christophel said.

“It makes you work harder on the little things you need to do in order to get open and make blocks. You should want it that way. If you’re successful against them during the week, then you’ve got to feel good about the game on Saturday.”

The Cajuns staged their second preseason situational scrimmage last Saturday at Cajun Field, and Christophel’s offense chalked up four touchdowns in first-half action.

But UL also suffered three lost fumbles and an interception, and the defense staged a pair of goal-line stands in the second half when the offense was set up with first-and-goal scenarios at the 6-yard line.
