PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - Officials in south Mississippi broke
ground Tuesday for a Jackson County Maritime Trades Academy that
will help train more people for shipbuilding jobs.
The facility was funded by a $20 million grant from the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Mike Petters, president of Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, said
in a news release that the academy is an investment in the economic
future of the Gulf Coast.
Northrop Grumman's shipyard in Pascagoula is the largest private
employer in Mississippi. The company has long had a maritime
training program with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
The new academy will allow the program to 1,000 apprentices at a
time, up from the current 610.
