Boyd, Mitchell excite crowd with fancy fast break in blowout victory

LOUISIANA La. — Has anyone here got the sheet music for “Sweet Georgia Brown”?

There were times Thursday night in the Cajundome when University of Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns showed elements of the Harlem Globetrotters, right down to a deep-snap hike from Brad Boyd to Dwayne Mitchell for a breakaway slam dunk.

Really, though, it was mainly relentless, often feverish defense that paved the way for the Cajuns’ 94-81 victory before 5,116 fans.

Coach Jessie Evans’ squad moved to 12-5 on the year and 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference Western Division, gaining separation from UNT, which entered the game as a contender but left a dazed 10-10 and 5-3.

“This made a strong statement to the rest of the league,” said Mitchell, who hit 10-of-12 shots and had a career-high 24 points. “We’re here, and we want to be No. 1.”

“We were up-and-down early in the year, but now we’re rolling real good,” said Boyd, whose 3-point bomb with 16:58 to play earned him a spot in UL’s 1,000-point club.

“It’s a big turnaround for us. We’ve got eight starters on the team. Anybody can play from 5 to 35 minutes.”

“We’re definitely a (NCAA) tournament team if we keep playing like this, and maybe win one or two games there,” Boyd said.

“This says teams have got to get ready for us,” Greene said. “We’re the No. 1 team in the conference.”
