A series of back-to-back accidents on Interstate 10 this morning caused miles of backup for drivers in Jeff Davis Parish.
Five accidents, involving 11 vehicles, all happened around the same time-- just before 9 am-- and within the same area-- along I10 in Welsh, between exits 49 and 54.
It all started with a 4-vehicle crash, when one driver lost control.
"It sideswiped a second vehicle, the second vehicle went through the median and struck a third vehicle-- which caused another vehicle to hit the 3rd; so it was a chain reaction," said State Trooper Sal Messina.
This caused another accident-- an 18-wheeler tried to avoid the 1st accident and drove into the median.
Then a 2-vehicle car crash right behind that, also in the eastbound lanes.
Lastly, 2 other 2-vehicle crashes happened in the westbound lanes, also in the same area.
State troopers say the cause in all 5 of these accidents is not being careful in the rain.
"(They) lost control on the wet roadway, probably going too fast for conditions; slowing down, that's what people need to remember," says Messina.
Traffic was backed up for about an hour, with one lane on each side blocked off during clean up.
Three people were taken to the hospital-- all from the first crash-- one with moderate injuries 2 others with minor injuries.
