Lafayette has hosted the Boys High School Basketball State Championship Tournament (The Top 28) since 1997. But 2011 will be the final year for the Top 28 in Lafayette. The LHSAA awarded the 2012 and 2013 Girls and Boys State Basketball State Championship Games to Shreveport. Officials with LHSAA say Shreveport offered to host the Championships at no cost to the LHSAA and the City of Shreveport will cover the majority of costs associated with the tournament.
The Basketball State Championship format is changing in 2012 with the Girls and Boys Championship Games to be played in Shreveport over a three day period from Thursday - Saturday. The semi - final games will be played at regional sites around the state a week earlier. Lafayette did not bid to host one of the regionals.
