  6. Default Cajuns sweep critical road trip

Louisiana flies back home today as the team to beat in the Sun Belt Conference.

Coach Jessie Evans’ Ragin’ Cajuns defeated Middle Tennessee 74-64 Saturday night in Mufreesboro, improving to 11-5 on the year and 6-1 in the league with a third road win in a row and fifth straight overall.

By contrast, Middle Tennessee (11-8, 3-3) suffered its second consecutive defeat at 11,520-seat Murphy Center.

“I don’t think anyone else in the conference can come on this road trip and win like this,” said Evans, whose team outscored Western Kentucky 110-102 Thursday night in Bowling Green.

As usual, the Cajuns won with scoring balance, often in unexpected ways.

Senior Laurie Bridges scored all 12 of his points in the second half, including a crucial 3-point bucket from the right wing that enabled UL to increase a narrow 62-58 lead to a more comfortable 65-58 with 2:30 to play.

“After the game with Western, we talked with Laurie about his performance,” Evans said. “He was so focused at practice, we knew he would show up tonight. He did a great job on defense and on communication on screens.

“On the 3-pointer, it was our fifth or sixth pass that found him open, and he’s supposed to take that shot.”

The Cajuns won despite a second-half stretch that saw them called for three traveling violations, a charge and for expiration of the shot clock as MT whittled a 56-44 Cajun lead down to 56-49.

Dwayne Mitchell’s tomahawk dunk after a Brad Boyd steal created the 56-44 Cajun lead, shortly following a technical foul on MT coach Kermit Davis. It was the first two of nine straight UL points by Mitchell.
