SCHRIEVER, La. (AP) - Louisiana officials could have approval
Wednesday on a proposal to build sand berms to protect barrier
islands from oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said a meeting with officials
Tuesday in New Orleans focused on two questions posed by President
Barack Obama: whether they could be built and how effective they
could be.
Allen said it is now clear the berms would offer a
"multiplier" effect protecting not only the islands but coastal
marshes. He said approval could come Wednesday.
But Allen said officials want to be sure construction won't
produce harmful environmental side effects, such as changing ocean
currents.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has sharply criticized delays in
approving the berm plan.
