    Folks,

Taking State Highway 71 into Austin is the way to go. It is interstate quality and safe highway with no stoplights until you get to Bastrop. But you need to watch your speed on this road as it is typically patrolled well ... especially around Columbus (where I-10 meets 71). The stretch of highway 71 in and around Columbus is nicknamed "The Toll Road" for a good reason. You can do 5 mph over well outside of Columbus. But 5mph over in Columbus can get you pulled over. This has happened to several people I know ... they are looking for drugs.

When you are on I-10 coming up on 71, be sure not to take the 71 Business Loop. Wait for the Hwy. 71 Exit to LaGrange/Austin.

That's the route google maps told me I think. Do you get off of I-1O after Houston?

Not until you get to Hwy. 71 at Columbus.

Yup, Hwy. 71 is a great way to head there, you can also take US 290 out of Houston, but the traffic is pretty bad until you get out of Cypress. I wish I could join y'all in watching the Cajuns shock the world, but my bro gets his honorable discharge this week from the Army. Since he was stationed at Ft. Hood, he doesn't really wanna see Texas for awhile...unless someone would like to tag along?

If not, is the radio broadcast on 105.1 or 1420??

    Made that mistake - ONCE.

BTW, are bluebonnets in season? 71 from Columbus is a beautiful drive when they are. Just have to look out for cars stopped to photograph...

There are still a few bluebonnets left on our street and other property we may be purchasing. But I believe it is getting late in the season.

I drove 71 last Friday and there wasn't a Bluebonnet to be seen. They're more of an early Spring (1st of April?) type of bloom, if I'm not mistaken.

I did see a couple fields of yellow/orange/reddish colored flowers north of Johnson City on 281. I'm not sure what those were, but they reminded me of seeing the fields of Bluebonnets, where there's just acres after acres of Blue. This, however, wasn't pretty at all...it looked like a giant, jumbled up Ragin Cajun logo...I was waiting for the pepper to jump out and start frightening kids.
