  1. UL Softball Mercy Me: UCLA wins 10-1 in CWS-clinching win over UL Women

LOS ANGELES — The 2010 College Softball season came to an end Sunday for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, after falling to the UCLA Bruins, 10-1, in five innings, in the second game of the best-of-three game NCAA Super Regional Series.

The mercy-rule win, the second in as many days for UCLA, sends the Bruins to the Womens' College World Series, in Oklahoma City.

"It's a great day to be a Bruin," said Kelly Inouye-Perez, UCLA Head Coach. "We had a vision at the beginning of the year, and we respected the game, took things day-by-day, and it paid off for us today."

Since UL has been great in softball (20 or so years), how many times has UL been run ruled (especially recent history) and has it ever happend 2 times in a row?

We were just overmatched and got rolled by a much better team.

Congrats to the softball team on a great season.

I looked at the past 7 years (as for back as ragincajuns.com will go) and UL was only beaten by 8 or more runs 5 times. Only 3 of those were true run rule games because 2 of them went the full 7 innings.

    Before yesterday:
    '10 Washington
    '09 Michigan
'08 Michigan (but went 7 innings)
'07 Arizona (but went 7 innings)
    '06
'05 Oklahoma (last game of the year, and we had beat Oklahoma earlier that day)

That was noted in our By the Numbers breakout on the print edition of the paper. Prior to Sunday, the Cajuns had NEVER been beaten in back-to-back run-rule games. In fact, as you noted, this is the first time that the Cajuns have been run-ruled twice (actually three times) in a season.

Also, another note: UCLA has run-ruled 20 of their opponents this year, which is a pretty amazing stat, considering the schedule they play. That gives you an idea of the power that they have on that team.

To get to the Super Regionals was a great accomplishment, magnified by the loss of key players. The determination with which the team played is the reason I love U.L. softball. Congratulations to the players and coaches for a memorable season.
I hope there was a good group of people to greet them when they arrived in Lafayette. I never heard of the arrival time back in Lafayette. I assume they're back and hope they had a warm greeting, as deserved.
