Newcomer helping Cajuns back to top of Sun Belt West.
LOUISIANA La. — Dwayne Mitchell is one of the recent additions to Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun basketball program, a good fit on a talented team in search of a third straight Sun Belt Conference Western Division title.
Just as importantly, the transfer from Auburn has blended well in the team chemistry department, something this year’s squad seems to have in abundance.
“This is a good, solid team,” Mitchell said. “Everybody on the team is a good player.”
On a team with six players scoring in double figures, with seniors Laurie Bridges, Antoine Landry, Brad Boyd and Chris Williams the established upperclassmen, it can be tough to grab attention.
Mitchell seized the spotlight on Jan. 3 against Houston, when his sudden, soaring slam dunk stunned the visiting Cougars and sent the crowd of 4,430 into a frenzy in the Cajundome.
“What do I add to the team? Excitement,” Mitchell said.
There can be no debate on that topic. The dunk against Houston is already tagged perhaps the most spectacular in Cajundome history.
