LOS ANGELES - No. 5 UCLA used seven-run, second inning to claim a 10-2, five-inning win over Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team in game one of the 2010 Los Angeles Super Regional on Saturday.
The Bruins (44-11) were the first team to post a run on the scoreboard after rattling off three hits in the first frame. With runners on first and third, Andrea Harrison singled in the infield. The throw to home plate sailed high allowing UCLA to take the early lead.
The Cajuns (45-17) countered in the second inning. An error, a hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases for UL with one out. A force out at home on a fielder’s choice kept the bases full for the Cajuns. Vallie Gaspard then hit a two-out chopper up the middle, scoring Britni Soria and Kelly Cormier to take the lead.
But UCLA would get things rolling in the second inning after knotting the score, 2-2, with a home run by Samantha Camusa. Two more runs would score for the Bruins on three consecutive hits, including a two-RBI double by GiOnna DiSalvatore. Back-to-back walks would load up the bases for UCLA. An error plated two runs before the first out of the inning was recorded. But the damage was done after five hits and one error put the Bruins up 8-2.
The Cajuns would struggle over the next three innings. Only two runners reached base safely with neither moving past first base.
A two-out solo home run by Dani Yudin stretched UCLA’s lead to 9-2 in the fourth inning.
Then in the fifth inning, DiSalvatore sent another ball out of the park to close the game in five innings.
Gaspard was responsible for three of the Cajuns’ four hits and had two RBI on the night. Kelly Cormier was 1-for-1 with one run scored.
Donna Bourgeois (23-10) was the losing pitcher of record. In 4.0 innings of work, she surrendered 12 hits and 10 runs, eight of which were earned. She struck out three and allowed two walks on the evening.
The Cajuns will face the Bruins again tomorrow, needing to win two games to advance to the 2010 Women’s College World Series. The first game will begin 6:05 p.m. CT. Game two, if necessary, will begin at 8:35 p.m. CT. Both game will be televised on ESPN 2 HD and ESPN3.com.
