Abbeville residents will soon be in the clear. Recent construction at the city's water plant has turned resident's drinking water brown. The renovations have been underway for about two years and the water became discolored in April.
Officials say that's because the final project, the Clarifier, is now under construction. Abbeville Public Works Director, Clay Menard says the Clarifier is the only treatment the water is not currently going through, which simply adds a clear cosmetic feature.
"The water is safe, it's safe to drink. It just doesn't have that clear... what we think water should look like," Menard said.
Menard says city officials decided to renovate the plant rather than just build a new one to save on costs. The construction has cost $2.7M and Menard says a new plant would have cost an additional $750,000.
Menard also says the construction is on schedule, stating the city informed residents that the water would be discolored for about 90 days. The water turned brown in April. Construction is scheduled to end by July.
