Thread: Red Wolves shock UL in SBC opener

  1. Default Red Wolves shock UL in SBC opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ? Arkansas State managed to do what only one Sun Belt Conference baseball team could during the second half of the regular season.

Find a way to beat UL.

After enduring a 90-minute delay due to inclement weather, the second-seeded Ragin' Cajuns fell to the seventh-seeded Red Wolves, 8-6, on Wednesday night in the first round of the league tournament at Middle Tennessee's Reese Smith Field.

UL (37-19) grabbed a 3-0 lead after three innings, but Arkansas State (29-26) used a five-run fourth to eventually pull the upset.

Look on the bright side....maybe we can send middle packing and at least get some revenge on them....they always seem to beat us in the tournament. My 2 years at UL we were beaten by them twice with one of the games being an elimination game.

I sure hope Zach deals today!

MT lost to Troy and finished early in the morning, so they are coming at us with little rest and facing our #1 pitcher with our backs to the wall. No excuses for this game. Let's win in and let's win this tournament.

I concur, we need to win 2 more games in the tournament....I would rather us not win the tournament I think it would be best for us to go 2-2 and not burn everyone out from playing 5 games in 3 days... Winning the tournament really does little for us, rather we are a 2 or 3 next week it doesn't matter you have to win and I would rather us be fresh than not...

We have bigger fish to fry next week.

before I get bashed, I'm not rooting against us. Besides if a team other than FAU or us wins the tournament the belt will be a lock for 3 teams.

I don't think anyone would ever accuse you of rooting against the Cajuns. If they do, they obviously don't know who you are and how much you contributed to the program.

But I do agree with what you are saying about being fresh next week. It would be great to win the conference tournament, but I'd rather win a regional than win the Sun Belt tournament.

How much of a disadvantage is it really to have to play past midnight and go at it with less than 12 hours between games? You think it will be noticeable in their hitting/fielding not being as sharp necessarily? You ever been in the situation MT are in?

We can all speculate as outsiders that it would seem like a big disadvantage, but I wanted to ask someone with a little more experience

Skip Bertman could have cared less about the SEC tournament every year.

I think many teams who are comfortably in the regionals at seasons end arent' well focused on conference tournament play. I think it is fair to say that often stands true for the coaching staffs as well. Just don't ask anyone of them to actually admit to that fact.

Actually yes. In 2004 we beat middle and the game was not over until around midnight. We got back to the hotel and in bed for 1:30. We had 7:00 AM batting practice the next day. We played Middle again, and got our asses kicked...
