FREMONT, Calif. (AP) - President Barack Obama says the kind of
deepwater oil drilling that was done by the rig that exploded in
the Gulf of Mexico is risky and costly to do, and the country won't
be able to sustain that kind of fossil fuel use.
Obama didn't say he would oppose deepwater drilling. But he said
that when companies have to go down a mile to hit the seabed and
then drill another mile to find oil, it increases costs and risks.
The president said there was no guarantee that BP's next attempt
to stop the devastating, month-old leak would be successful, but if
not, other approaches would be tried.
Obama spoke Wednesday to workers at a solar panel plant in
Northern California and said the spill underscored the need for
alternative energy sources.
