Louisiana overcomes poor shooting for 67-53 victory
LOUISIANA La. — If defense wins championships, then UL has a shot at the Sun Belt Conference championship this season.
If good shooting is the key, though, it might be an uphill battle.
The Ragin’ Cajuns hit just 39.7 percent of their shots Thursday night, but still beat the New Mexico State Aggies 67-53 before 4,716 fans at the Cajundome to improve to 8-5 on the year and 3-1 in league play.
Combined with a 72-63 Middle Tennessee road win at South Alabama, the victory puts the Cajuns back on top in the hunt for the West Division crown.
“It’s good to be back in first place,” Cajun coach Jessie Evans said. “It’s going to be like this every game, like pulling teeth.”
Forward Brian Hamilton led the way for the Cajuns with 16 points and 15 rebounds — both game highs — with 12 points from Brad Boyd and 11 from Dwayne Mitchell.
“We got a great effort from Brian,” Evans said. “He did an awesome job on defense and offense, and was able to draw fouls on James Moore.”The rest of the story
